In 2014, for the event of its 1150 years, Monnaie de Paris introduces a new theme for the series and will offer for the next 7 years new coins on the theme <THE COINS THAT HAVE MARKED HISTORY OF FRANCE>.

The grafic choyce is to be inspired by the ancient coins and not reproduce the identicals. These coins are a hommage and not copies of those that have strongly influenced the political and economical evolution of our country.

After the denier of Charles le Chauve and the Franc on the Horse, Monnaie de Paris introduces the Teston, first coin in gros Silver.

It is in the occasion of the Italian war (1494) that Louis XII then King of France, discovers the Teston : a heavy coin in silver minted for ten years by the princes of the italian Renaissance. Carachterised by the presence of new concept of a portrait related to Antiquity, the coin achieves the name of Teston (fron Italian Testa, Head).

Becoming Duke of Milan, the king of France ask to print identical coins bringing back the portrait, after centuries of absence on the royal coins.

The first Testons minted in France would then be of Frances the 1st (1515-1547), in Paris, followed by others in different workshops of the kingdom. The portraits will have an evolution, following the age of the King. The Teston dated 1540-47 will sign the end of the sovereign.

The king is crowned with an antique look according to the carachteristics of the French Renaissance at the time very fashionable.

OBVERSE :

The front represents the Seeder of Roty in a frame more contemporary: surrounded by 12 stars of the european flag, the female figure is framed in the french heraldic flag (horizontal lines for the blue, flat for the white, vertical for the red) the vintage on both sides of the legs.

The different of the Monnaie de Paris and the workshops are below the feet of the seeder, the mention RF under the right arm.

REVERSE :

The back of the coin is surrounded by a scalloped draw.

Introduces on the right side the front and the back of the Teston. The fields on the background are covered with Renaissance motives: The Vitruvius Man, the coat of arms of lilies and the salamander, or the castle of Chambord, representative elements of the epoque of Francis 1st.
