Is it better to buy or sell when the gold price rises?

The 14/03/2022 in "Gold prices"

Do you sell or buy new gold coins, bars or ingots when the price of gold is at its highest?

This is the question that many of you may be asking today as the gold price surge is intensified by the war in Ukraine. Global geopolitics has indeed had a very important impact on its fluctuations. After the period of the pandemic, then the period of galloping inflation that we are experiencing, it is now the war in Europe that is influencing the price of gold, reaching new records in 2022.

There are three possibilities depending on your investor profile:

  • You are a smart saver and by reselling gold bought several years ago you are able to make an interesting capital gain. You have been waiting for this moment for a long time, so you take advantage of the high gold price to sell at a good price.
  • you are a new gold buyer, the continuous rise in the gold price may be a signal for you to try to make a profit in a few months if the situation persists. You therefore choose to buy gold (at the legal price, of course) because you believe that the situation will not turn around in the immediate future.
  • you are a prudent saver, your objective is to secure part of your assets and for you, fluctuations in the price of gold are therefore of little importance and do not influence your savings strategy, which consists of buying gold regularly.

Gold is a safe haven par excellence, which is attractive in times of uncertainty and crisis. The price of gold is constantly subject to numerous factors such as pandemics, inflation, currency wars and other embargoes, trade policies, conflicts, etc.

Gold does not earn interest and is not considered an investment as such. It has the advantage of minimising the impact of a financial crisis and protecting savings. As a volatile asset whose price fluctuates constantly, it is up to each individual to choose the best time to buy or sell.
