PERTH MINT: AUSTRALIA'S OFFICIAL CURRENCY
The Perth Mint was established on 20 June 1899, at the height ofWestern Australia's gold rush. Over the next three decades, it refined gold and minted 106 million sovereigns, playing a crucial role in the rapid growth of Western Australia's economy. Renowned for its quality, expertise and efficiency, the Perth Mintbecame one of Australia's leading producers of circulation coins from 1940 to 1984.
In 1986, it refocused on the production of fine gold coins, including the world-famousAustralian Kangaroo (originally known as the Australian Nugget). This marked a turning point in its history, leading to the creation of other popular coins such as theAustralian Kookaburra and theAustralian Koala, which are highly coveted by investors and collectors of fine silver coins.
Today, the Perth Mint is a unique business, offering refining and investment services in addition to its renowned coin minting division. Its visitor attraction showcasesWestern Australia 's gold history and 125-year heritage. Each coin, made from one ounce of 99.95% pure platinum, is legal tender under the Australian Coinage Act 1965.
