History of the 50 peso coin
The Mint of Mexico mints the Centenario to celebrate national independence: Mexico has become a country in its own right, confirming its status as a Spanish colony.
The Casa de Moneda de México launched the series in 1921 to mark the centenary of independence. The engravers depict the winged Victory in front of the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes, the country's emblematic volcanoes located next to each other. The Popocatépetl volcano has been active since the 14th century, unlike its dormant neighbor, which has the shape of a sleeping silhouette.
The Mexican authorities organized regular strikes from 1921 to 1931, then from 1944 to 1947 to meet demand. Catalogs distinguish type 1943, which belongs to the same family, but does not bear the denomination on the reverse. The typology archives define the following format: gold 900‰, 41.666 g and 37 mm, as the standard format for this gold coin. This format is recognized internationally .
The Mexican state then revives production to supply the world market. Between 1949 and 1972, the Mint carried out large-scale re-strikes dated "1947", bringing total circulation to over 12 million. Circulation tables show that 3,975,654 coins were re-struck during this period, while the original series only counted 309,000 units for the 1947 vintage, which explains the abundance of examples in very good condition.
Price trend of the 50 peso gold coin over 20 years (2005-2025)
The euro gold market mechanically supports the intrinsic value of the Centenario over the period 2005-2025. The curves show a marked rise up to 2012, a consolidation over the period 2013-2018, then a bullish recovery from 2019 onwards, leading to new peaks in 2024-2025.
Why is the 50 peso gold coin a wise investment choice?
The Centenario contains 37.5 g of fi gold, making it the heaviest gold investment coin. It often commands a low premium compared with smaller formats. The international market widely recognizes this standard, reinforcing its liquidity for both purchase and resale. Investors can easily identify the coin by its iconography and slice currency, simplifying its appraisal.
VARIABLE VINTAGES / EFFIGIES
Vintages and/or effigies of these coins are sent randomly according to our stocks.
As these are bullion coins and not collector's items, their years of issue or effigies have no impact on their value or resale price.
