HISTORY :
The cistophore was minted under Claudius for the first time since the great coinage of this denomination by Augustus. Claudian issues were nowhere near as large, and the coins we can see generally show significant wear, indicating that they circulated widely. These issues may all have been commemorative in nature and were not intended to be regular coins for the region. There are four main types of Claudius' cistophore issues: those that include Agrippina (his wife); issues dedicated to Artemis (Diana) and her temple, as above; issues with temple reverses ROM AND AVG; and, at the end of his reign, issues that identify Nero as his successor.
