PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Crawford recorded an estimate of 132 right hand corners and 147 reverse corners. The CMDRR authors identified a total of four different varieties for this type, which is therefore rarer than the general literature suggests.
OBVERSE :
Legend: EX SC
Translation: "ex senatus consulto" or "With the consent of the Senate".
Description: Laureate head of Saturn on the left; behind, a harp; under the chin, a control mark; below, inscription.
REVERSE :
Legend: L•C•MEMIES•L•F // GAL
Translation: "Lucius and Caius Memmius Lucii Filii Galerius" or "Lucius and Caius Memmius son of Lucius Memmius Galerius".
Description: Venus in a bige walking on the right, holding the reins with both hands and a sceptre with the left hand; above, a Cupid flying on the left holding a crown.
HISTORY :
The Memmii were members of a plebeian family in Rome. The first member to be recognised was Gaius Memmius Gallus, praetor in 173 BC. From the War of Jugurtha to the age of Augustus, they contributed to the Republic through numerous tribunes.
