Expert analyse
Copy on an oval blank well centered on both sides with visible grenetis. Very nice portrait of Tatius. Reverse side well struck.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The reverse commemorates the execution of Tarpeia. For this type, Crawford found an estimate of 294 right corners and 327 reverse corners. This type of the death of Tarpeia seems to be less common than that of the Abduction of the Sabine women.
OBVERSE :
Legend: SABIN
Translation: "Sabinus".
Description: Naked and bearded head of Tatius on the right; a palm under his chin.
REVERSE :
Legend: L. TITVRI
Translation: "Lucius Titurius".
Description: Tarpeia kneels face down between two soldiers who throw their shields at her.
HISTORY :
The Titurii were members of a family (plebeian or patrician) of uncertain rank and seem to have been of lesser importance.
Tarpeia is said to have surrendered the city of Rome to the Sabines following the abduction of the Sabines by Romulus and his men. On the orders of King Tatius, she was killed by the Sabines who crushed her under their shields.
