PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
It is a siege coin minted in times of war or military siege, in a few copies to limit the loss of cash and to give a salary to the inhabitants and soldiers.
Most of the coins of 5 sols were overprinted, among others on monnerons of 2 sols.
OBVERSE :

HISTORY :
Mainz had been taken by General Custine on 21 October 1792 and he found himself besieged by the Prussians from 6 April 1793. The French only surrendered on 22 July 1793. The troops that surrendered at Mainz were sent to the Vendée where they were eventually wiped out. General Custine who had commanded the place during the siege was guillotined for treason.
