PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Poland of the Congress of Vienna formed a kingdom entrusted to the Tsar of Russia, Alexander I (1801-1825). The Tsar gave Poland a constitution, but a revolt broke out on 29 November 1830 and Grand Duke Constantine had to flee Warsaw. The whole of Poland rose up and the Diet proclaimed the deposition of the Romanovs. Tsar Nicholas I (1825-1855) had to send an army of over one hundred thousand men to quell the rebellion, which was crushed in bloody battle at Ostrolenka in May 1831. Warsaw was recaptured on 8 September. More than ten thousand Poles went into exile, to France in particular. Nicholas I abolished the Constitution of 1815 and encouraged the Russification of the country.
