The 50 Pesos in Gold : the story of a historic and valuable investment

The 16/08/2023 in "Gold"

The 50 peso gold coin, also known as the "Centenario", was created to celebrate the centenary of Mexico's independence in 1921. It quickly became a national icon, symbolising the country's pride and sovereignty. The coin's design is rich in symbolism, featuring important elements of Mexican history and culture.

This article explores in depth the meaning, history and value of this gold coin.

History and characteristics of the 50 Pesos gold coin

Produced from 1921 onwards, the 50 peso coin is a direct reference to the Mexican independence achieved 100 years earlier, in 1821. The coin has a number of distinctive features.

Firstly, the obverse of the coin depicts the emblematic Angel of Independence, a statue in Mexico City erected to commemorate the centenary of independence. The angel is surrounded by inscriptions recalling important dates in Mexican history.

The reverse of the coin also features the Mexican national shield. This shield is divided into three sections. The upper section features a Mexican eagle perched on a cactus and devouring a snake. The central section contains an image of the pyramid of Teotihuacan, an important archaeological site in Mexico. The lower section often features the inscription "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" (United Mexican States) and the year the coin was issued.

The coin quickly became an international success. In France, the 50 peso coin was listed on the gold market from 1951 until its withdrawal from the French gold market in 2004.
Although it was somewhat overshadowed in the late 1970s by the one-ounce Krugerrand gold coin, it regained considerable popularity in the late 1980s.

Reflecting a flagship investment currency

In addition to its historical significance, the 50 peso gold coin stands out for its artistic excellence. Its design was created by the artist Emilio del Moral, and its production was entrusted to the workshop of the Mint of Mexico. Every detail is carefully chiselled, capturing the grace and grandeur of the angel and the majesty of the eagle. The coin embodies the union between art and history, making it an eloquent example of Mexican artistic talent.

It should also be noted that the 50 peso coin contains 37.5 grams of pure gold, with a gross weight of 41.66 grams and a gold content of 900 thousandths, like most bullion coins in circulation at the beginning of the 20th century.

What's more, the 50 peso gold coin is minted from an alloy containing 90% pure gold and 10% copper, giving it a warm colour and timeless lustre. It has a face value of 50 Mexican pesos, but its real value goes far beyond that. Because of its gold content and historical significance, the coin is highly prized by collectors and investors around the world. The coin also represents a store of value, allowing investors to protect themselves against inflation and economic instability.

As a result, the 50 Pesos gold coin has become an integral part of the investment gold landscape and represents a good alternative financial investment.
