Gold Krugerrand : symbol and history of a prized contemporary coin

The 13/12/2023 in "Gold"

The gold Krugerrand has been the world's most famous bullion coin for over 50 years. This first one-ounce gold coin was minted by the South African Mint and issued in the Republic of South Africa in 1967. This coin revolutionised gold investment. It has a unique history and features that make it a very popular and sought-after currency for investors around the world.

History and fascination of an exceptional coin

The Krugerrand gold coin was minted for the first time on 3 July 1967 and was intended to maintain economic freedom outside the monetary circuit. This is known as hoarding. Nevertheless, it should be a starting point for the democratisation of gold for all types of investors. South Africa was and still is known as a gold-producing country.

To put this in perspective, Western countries own 75% of the gold produced by this country. So South Africa launched this project and it was a great success (over 40,000 gold coins were produced in the first year). The phenomenon developed exponentially, and in 1974 the number of coins produced exceeded 3 million, and by 1978 it had already reached 6 million.

What's more, by 1980, it accounted for almost 90% of the world gold coin market, outstripping other iconic gold coins such as the 20 Francs or Napoléon and the 20 Francs or Coq Marianne. Following this enthusiasm, other Krugerrand coins were issued in 1980.

Characteristics and values of a global monetary heritage

The Krugerrand is distinguished from other exchangeable gold coins by its unique face value (916/1000). In fact, the coin is made from an alloy of copper and gold for perfect durability. Another feature is that there is no face value. It is only 1 ounce of pure gold. The weight is 33.93 g and the diameter is 32 mm. South Africa has also produced it in three other coin sizes : 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/10 ounce.

The obverse of the coin features the profile of Paul Kruger, who was born in Bulhoek, South Africa, on 10 October 1825 and died in Clarence, Switzerland, on 14 July 1904. He was regarded as a symbol of nationalism, particularly at the beginning of the 20th century during the struggle against Great Britain.

His profile was designed by Otto Schulz. The German artist was commissioned to produce it, as there were no coins in South Africa at the time. The obverse also bears the words "Suid-Afrika - South Africa". This is the translation of "South Africa" into English and Afrikaans, the language of Germanic origin and the country's second official language.

The reverse of the coin depicts a springbok, a South African antelope. It is the symbolic animal of this country. This illustration was created by Coert Steynburg, a South African sculptor from the Afrikaner community. The word "Krugerrand" is inscribed at the top of the reverse, along with the date, which is separated on the left and right edges. Finally, the bottom of the reverse shows the year, quantity and purity of the gold.

The Gold Krugerrand coin : a must-have for your investment portfolio

Although the Krugerrand has seen less glorious times throughout its history, the one-ounce gold coin has returned to prominence among investors. The gold Krugerrand therefore has all the characteristics needed to be considered an essential gold coin for diversifying your investment portfolio. In addition to being legal tender, it was minted after 1800 and contains over 900 thousandths of gold.

What's more, this one-ounce gold coin is subject to the same taxation as gold bars.
This means that there is no VAT when you buy a Krugerrand, just like when you buy other gold bullion coins. On resale, you can choose between :

  • precious metals tax, which represents 11.5% of the sale price
  • capital gains tax of 36.2%. Note that this tax applies only to profits

Taking these parameters into account, if you keep your Krugerrand gold coins for several years and resell them at the right time (depending on the gold quotation), you have the means to make a good profit.

Highly popular and recommended by experts, this gold coin is also a solid alternative to gold bullion as a stable option for securing your asset portfolio for two main reasons : it has a solid international reputation and it is very easy to resell anywhere in the world, not least because of its format.

The Krugerrand would therefore represent a sustainable investment option to own to guard against the collapse of the financial system and to protect you from economic fluctuations.

As a result, the Krugerrand was the first tradable gold coin to contain an ounce of gold, making it easier to assess its value in relation to the price of gold. As investors evaluate potential returns and study financial charts, buying physical gold like the Krugerrand offers a viable option to most other financial investments.

Buyers from a variety of financial backgrounds value this currency as a way to build an efficient and diversified portfolio with gold. Owning a Krugerrand offers great liquidity in a variety of situations, and has done so for generations.

Investing in the Krugerrand would therefore be an excellent financial investment choice. So if you want to buy gold coins, the Krugerrand is your best bet !
