Who was Hatshepsut?
Queen Hatshepsut was born in 1507 BC and ascended to the throne of Egypt in 1478 BC. Officially, she reigned jointly with Thutmose III, who had acceded to the throne the year before when he was only two years old.
The seven-ton granite Sphinx of Hatshepsut has the body of a lion and a human head wearing a headgear and a royal beard. The statue has the usual symbolic and powerful muscles of the lion. This sphinx is one of the many granite sphinxes that once stood in the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahri.
