French (1795 - 1889) and Belgian (Leopold II) 5 Franc Ecus are sent to you randomly depending on our stocks.
As these are investment coins and not collector coins, their countries of issue, vintages or effigies have no impact on their value or resale price.
History and characteristics of the 5 Franc Ecu
In the 19th century, the 5 franc ecu was very popular. This large silver coin was a reference value.
Towards the end of the same century, speculation on silver increased, resulting in a readjustment of the value of currencies.
For this reason, several European countries such as France, Switzerland, Italy and Belgium concluded an agreement on 23 December 1865 to mint their currencies on an identical monetary standard, giving rise to the Latin Monetary Union on 1 August 1866. Greece joined in 1868.
Thus, during this century, the 5 franc ecu was very popular in several countries. This large silver coin was in itself a reference value.
We offer this coin in two forms:
- the 5 franc ecu struck between 1795 and 1889 for France
- the 5 franc Leopold II ecu minted from 1867 to 1876 for Belgium.
Also sold in a sealed bag of 45 coins.
OBVERSE :
There are differente effigies for the front of the same coin. So it may be the head of Napoleon III crowned with laurel, or the Hercules of Cérès, of Vittorio and Amadeo or furthermore Leopold Ist and Leopold III king of Belgians.
General rule, the mention of the front identify the effigy. The year of emission can be showed in the lower part of the front if concerns the spanish crown.
On the other crowns, is generally visible on the back of the coin.
REVERSE :
The back of the coin can change according to the year and the country of issue. we can find the army of the empire if it has been coined under Napoleon III, but also a Republic allegory for the latest.
