This 10 franc gold coin was introduced by decree on 20 July 1899. It was minted specially for the Paris Universal Exhibition of the same year. The 1899 Universal Exhibition is famous for celebrating the tenth Universal Exhibition. Its theme was the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution, and it marked the start of the construction of the Eiffel Tower.

The reverse of this coin features the symbol of the French Republic: the cockerel walking to the left. Surrounding this animal is the motto of the French Republic: ‘Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité’, as well as the value of the coin (10 Francs).
