PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The 20 Francs or Coq Marianne is the French gold coin emblematic of the period when the Gold Franc shone in Europe. It was the first time under the Third Republic that an original design by Jules-Clément Chaplain was engraved on a French gold coin.
After 1905 and the separation of the church and the state, the coins had to follow the trends of the time. Therefore, following anti-clerical pressure, the mention engraved on the edge "God save France" was replaced in 1907 by "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity."
These coins have the distinction of being re-minted in the 50's with former original coins. Indeed, because of the gold stocks melted or lost during the two world wars, as well as very damaged coins or cropped, and to revive the use of gold, it was decided in 1948 to reopen the gold market. These new coins issued by the Bank of France are obviously real coins, but previous vintages are engraved. Professionals call these pieces "the Minting Pinay."
As a matter of facts, it makes the coins of 20 francs "Marianne-Coq" of the period 1907-1914 extremely numerous and in perfect condition because they have not been circulating. 37 millions Marianne Coq 1907 - 1914 vintage will be minted between 1951 and 1960.
