Britannia is the female representation of Great Britain and has been the modern face of the coins of our partner, The Royal Mint, since 1987.

The history of this icon begins with its appearance on Hadrian's coins, circa 119 AD, as a symbol of a new province and a new people.

The representation of Britannia was then revived on the coins of Charles II in 1672 and has appeared on the coins of every monarch since.

When the Britannia coins were created by The Royal Mint in 1987, Philip Nathan created a classic interpretation of the icon. He presented Britannia with a strong maritime influence, standing above the waves with a trident, shield and olive branch in hand - instantly recognisable in an international market as the modern face of British bullion and a symbol of the national spirit.

The iconic design has evolved over time and now includes four new advanced security features, making it visually the most secure coin in the world.
