A COIN OF RENOWN
The Sovereign was first minted in 1489 when Henry VII asked for a "new gold coin" to represent the power of his reign. Issued by all subsequent monarchs
until the beginning of the reign of James I, the monetary reforms of 1816 gave rise to a new Sovereign coin, featuring Benedetto Pistrucci's St George and the Dragon design.
Made for kings and queens since 1489, and representing the pinnacle of the art of coinage, the Gold Sovereign has been renowned throughout history for its strength, reliability and accuracy. In 2022, The Royal Mint, Godot & Sons' official partner, is unveiling a special edition to commemorate a historic royal event: the platinum jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen.
Since 1952, The Queen has performed her royal duties with unwavering grace and dedication, honouring the promise she made in a televised speech in which she pledged her "heart and devotion" to the nations of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. The Queen's Platinum Jubilee marks a significant milestone in a truly remarkable reign and an achievement of such eminence deserves special commemoration.
AN EXCLUSIVE DESIGN
To honour this achievement, which we are unlikely to see again for centuries, the Sovereign 2022 coin features a rare change to the reverse design and instead displays an interpretation of the Royal Coat of Arms by artist Timothy Noad, making it his third Sovereign reverse design.
