The Gold Sovereign, also known as the Sovereign, is a gold coin produced by the British Royal Mint since 1817. This coin is considered one of the most famous gold coins in the world, and is known for its elegance, quality and fascinating history.

The Sovereign is a one ounce coin, made of 91.67% fine gold (22 carat), with a total weight of 7.98 grams. Its diameter is 22.05 mm and its thickness is 1.52 mm. The obverse of the coin shows the image of the British sovereign in office at the time the coin was produced. The image has been modified over the years to reflect the monarch in office. The obverse of the coin also features the text "DEI GRATIA REGINA" (or "DEI GRATIA REX"), which means "by the grace of God, Queen (or King)", as well as the name of the monarch in office.

On the reverse of the coin is the image of King George on horseback, brandishing a spear, slaying a dragon. This image represents heroism and strength, and has become a symbol of Britain. The reverse of the coin also features the text "BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:" which means "Queen (or King) of the Britons, Defender of the Faith". This inscription is often abbreviated to "FID DEF", which has become a symbol of the British Monarchy.

In addition, the gold sovereign was created in 1817 during the reign of George III, as a bullion coin to be used as a means of payment. It became very popular among collectors and investors because of its quality and value.
