The reverse of the coin also features the Mexican national shield. This shield is divided into three sections. The upper section features a Mexican eagle perched on a cactus and devouring a snake. The central section contains an image of the pyramid of Teotihuacan, an important archaeological site in Mexico. The coin quickly became an international success. In France, the 50 peso coin was listed on the gold market from 1951 until its withdrawal from the French gold market in 2004. 
Although it was somewhat overshadowed in the late 1970s by the one-ounce Krugerrand gold coin, it regained considerable popularity in the late 1980s.

It has a face value of 50 Mexican pesos, but its real value goes far beyond that.
