In 2014 The Royal Mint launches a series of Lunar coins that lend a unique British angle to an ancient tradition. They are the perfect way to continue the Lunar New Year gifting tradition that brings good fortune to the recipient, or to begin a beautiful new collection.
They are a first for The Royal Mint – the first legal tender Lunar coins struck for the United Kingdom – and they begin a wonderful new series: the Shēngxiào Collection, named in honour of the Chinese zodiac.

OBVERSE :

The bust of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse side of the Maple Leaf 1 oz, gracefully aging across various vintage coins in a design by Ian Rank- Broadley FRBS.

REVERSE :

The coin was designed by Wuon-Gean Ho, an artist of Chinese descent born in the UK. She works in many disciplines including silkscreen prints, animation, etchings and books, has work in collections including the Tate and the V&A Museum and is also a qualified veterinary surgeon. This is the first commission Wuon-Gean Ho has produced for The Royal Mint.
